2. kniha Machabejcov

1 (KAT) Asi v tom čase sa musel Antiochus s hanbou vracať z perzských krajov.
1 (KJV) About that time came Antiochus with dishonour out of the country of Persia

2 (KAT) Vnikol totiž do mesta Persepolis a pokúšal sa olúpiť chrám a zmocniť sa mesta. Ľud sa však zbehol, chopil sa zbraní a útok odrazil. Obyvateľstvo zahnalo Antiocha na útek a tak musel s hanbou odtiahnuť.
2 (KJV) For he had entered the city called Persepolis, and went about to rob the temple, and to hold the city; whereupon the multitude running to defend themselves with their weapons put them to flight; and so it happened, that Antiochus being put to flight of the inhabitants returned with shame.

3 (KAT) Keď bol pri Ekbatanách, dozvedel sa, čo sa prihodilo Nikanorovi a Timotejovým oddielom.
3 (KJV) Now when he came to Ecbatane, news was brought him what had happened unto Nicanor and Timotheus.

4 (KAT) V návale hnevu sa vtedy nazdával, že aj potupu svojho zahnania dá pocítiť Židom. Preto rozkázal pohoničovi hnať bez zastávky, aby čím skôr dorazil cestu. Ale už sa nad ním vznášal trest z neba. Veď vo svojej pýche takto hovoril: „Z Jeruzalema urobím židovský cintorín, keď ta prídem.“
4 (KJV) Then swelling with anger. he thought to avenge upon the Jews the disgrace done unto him by those that made him flee. Therefore commanded he his chariotman to drive without ceasing, and to dispatch the journey, the judgment of GOd now following him. For he had spoken proudly in this sort, That he would come to Jerusalem and make it a common burying place of the Jew s.

5 (KAT) Ale vševidiaci Pán, Boh Izraela, zasiahol ho nevyhojiteľnou a neviditeľnou ranou. Len čo vypovedal svoju vyhrážku, pochytila ho ukrutná bolesť čriev a hrozné vnútorné muky.
5 (KJV) But the Lord Almighty, the God of Isreal, smote him with an incurable and invisible plague: or as soon as he had spoken these words, a pain of the bowels that was remediless came upon him, and sore torments of the inner parts;

6 (KAT) A celkom spravodlivo sa tak stalo, lebo sám týral vnútro iných mnohými novými mukami. Ale zo svojej pýchy ani tak nepopustil.
6 (KJV) And that most justly: for he had tormented other men's bowels with many and strange torments.

7 (KAT) Ba úplne preniknutý nadutosťou sršal z neho ako oheň hnev proti Židom. A rozkázal popohnať ešte väčším cvalom. Tak sa stalo, že v šialenom behu vypadol z voza a pri páde utrpel taký náraz, že si povykrúcal všetky údy.
7 (KJV) Howbeit he nothing at all ceased from his bragging, but still was filled with pride, breathing out fire in his rage against the Jews, and commanding to haste the journey: but it came to pass that he fell down from his chariot, carried violently; so that having a sore fall, all the members of his body were much pained.

8 (KAT) Ten, ktorý sa vo svojej nadľudskej namyslenosti nazdával, že môže rozkazovať morským vlnám, a ktorý si myslel, že na vážkach odváži najvyššie vrchy, bol zrazený k zemi, takže ho museli odniesť na nosidlách. Tým sa stal zjavným dôkazom Božej moci.
8 (KJV) And thus he that a little afore thought he might command the waves of the sea, (so proud was he beyond the condition of man) and weigh the high mountains in a balance, was now cast on the ground, and carried in an horselitter, shewing forth unto all the manifest power of God.

9 (KAT) Ba z bezbožníkovho tela sa až tak sypali červy a jeho mäso sa už zaživa rozpadávalo za hrozných bolestí. Zápach z jeho rozkladu zaľahol na všetko vojsko v tábore.
9 (KJV) So that the worms rose up out of the body of this wicked man, and whiles he lived in sorrow and pain, his flesh fell away, and the filthiness of his smell was noisome to all his army.

10 (KAT) Toho, čo sa len krátko predtým nazdával, že dosiahne nebeské hviezdy, nemohol nik vydržať pre neznesiteľný zápach.
10 (KJV) And the man, that thought a little afore he could reach to the stars of heaven, no man could endure to carry for his intolerable stink.

11 (KAT) Konečne sa začal pod ťarchou súženia mierniť vo svojej prepiatej pýche a pod Božím bičom vstupovať do seba, lebo bolesti sa každým okamihom stupňovali.
11 (KJV) Here therefore, being plagued, he began to leave off his great pride, and to come to the knowledge of himself by the scourge of God, his pain increasing every moment.

12 (KAT) A keď už ani sám nemohol zniesť svoj zápach, vyslovil sa takto: „Je spravodlivé byť poddaným Bohu a smrteľník nech si spupne nenamýšľa, že je rovný Bohu.“
12 (KJV) And when he himself could not abide his own smell, he said these words, It is meet to be subject unto God, and that a man that is mortal should not proudly think of himself if he were God.

13 (KAT) I modlil sa ten ničomník k Pánovi, ktorý sa už nemal nad ním zmilovať, a sľuboval,
13 (KJV) This wicked person vowed also unto the Lord, who now no more would have mercy upon him, saying thus,

14 (KAT) že zabezpečí slobodu svätému mestu, ku ktorému sa ponáhľal dostať, aby ho zrovnal so zemou a obrátil na cintorín;
14 (KJV) That the holy city (to the which he was going in haste to lay it even with the ground, and to make it a common buryingplace,) he would set at liberty:

15 (KAT) a že všetkých Židov, ktorých si zaumienil spolu aj s ich deťmi pohodiť (za pokrm) dravým vtákom a divým zverom, nakoľko vraj nie sú hodni ani pohrebu, zrovnoprávni s Aténčanmi;
15 (KJV) And as touching the Jews, whom he had judged not worthy so much as to be buried, but to be cast out with their children to be devoured of the fowls and wild beasts, he would make them all equals to the citizens of Athens:

16 (KAT) a tiež si zaumienil ozdobiť svätý chrám, ktorý predtým olúpil, nádhernými darmi a chcel mnohonásobne doplniť všetky sväté nádoby, ba z vlastných dôchodkov mienil hradiť aj výlohy spojené s obetami,
16 (KJV) And the holy temple, which before he had spoiled, he would garnish with goodly gifts, and restore all the holy vessels with many more, and out of his own revenue defray the charges belonging to the sacrifices:

17 (KAT) okrem toho sa chcel stať Židom a pochodiť celý obývaný svet, aby ohlasoval Božiu moc.
17 (KJV) Yea, and that also he would become a Jew himself, and go through all the world that was inhabited, and declare the power of God.

18 (KAT) Ale keď muky nijako neprestávali - došiel totiž na neho spravodlivý Boží trest -, v zúfalstve napísal Židom nasledujúci list na odprosenie s takýmto obsahom:
18 (KJV) But for all this his pains would not cease: for the just judgment of God was come upon him: therefore despairing of his health, he wrote unto the Jews the letter underwritten, containing the form of a supplication, after this manner:

19 (KAT) „Výborným občanom, Židom, mnoho pozdravov posiela a zdravie i šťastie želá kráľ a vladár Antiochus.
19 (KJV) Antiochus, king and governor, to the good Jews his citizens wisheth much joy, health, and prosperity:

20 (KAT) Ak sa máte dobre vy a vaše deti a všetko sa vám darí podľa vášho priania, vzdávam za to Bohu najväčšiu vďaku. Svoju nádej skladám už len v nebeského (Boha).
20 (KJV) If ye and your children fare well, and your affairs be to your contentment, I give very great thanks to God, having my hope in heaven.

21 (KAT) Nemoc ma síce pripútava k posteli, ale láskyplne si spomínam na vašu úctu a oddanosť voči mne. Keď som sa vracal z perzských krajov, upadol som do ťažkej choroby, a preto som pokladal za potrebné postarať sa o všeobecnú istotu.
21 (KJV) As for me, I was weak, or else I would have remembered kindly your honour and good will returning out of Persia, and being taken with a grievous disease, I thought it necessary to care for the common safety of all:

22 (KAT) Nezúfam nad sebou, lebo mám pevnú nádej, že vyviaznem z tejto choroby.
22 (KJV) Not distrusting mine health, but having great hope to escape this sickness.

23 (KAT) Predsa však uvažujem ako môj otec, ktorý svojho času, keď sa vydával na výpravu do náhorných krajov, určil si nástupcu,
23 (KJV) But considering that even my father, at what time he led an army into the high countries. appointed a successor,

24 (KAT) aby - keby sa mu prihodilo niečo neočakávané alebo by sa mu naskytla nejaká ťažkosť - obyvatelia krajiny vedeli, komu bola prenechaná správa, a tak boli uchránení od nepokojov;
24 (KJV) To the end that, if any thing fell out contrary to expectation, or if any tidings were brought that were grievous, they of the land, knowing to whom the state was left, might not be troubled:

25 (KAT) ďalej mám na zreteli aj to, že susední mocnári, ktorí hraničia s naším kráľovstvom, len číhajú na vhodnú príležitosť a s napätím čakajú, čo sa (so mnou) stane; preto som určil za kráľa svojho syna Antiocha, ktorého som mnohým z vás častejšie zveroval a odporúčal, keď som odchádzal do náhorných krajov. Napísal som mu list, ktorého odpis pripojujem.
25 (KJV) Again, considering how that the princes that are borderers and neighbours unto my kingdom wait for opportunities, and expect what shall be the event. I have appointed my son Antiochus king, whom I often committed and commended unto many of you, when I went up into the high provinces; to whom I have written as followeth:

26 (KAT) Preto vás žiadam a prosím, aby ste pamätali na dobrodenia, ktoré som vám preukazoval či už všetkým, alebo jednotlivcom, a aby ste zachovali v svojej priazni mňa i môjho syna.
26 (KJV) Therefore I pray and request you to remember the benefits that I have done unto you generally, and in special, and that every man will be still faithful to me and my son.

27 (KAT) Som presvedčený, že on bude s miernosťou a láskavosťou pokračovať v mojich zásadách a že si dobre porozumie s vami.“
27 (KJV) For I am persuaded that he understanding my mind will favourably and graciously yield to your desires.

28 (KAT) V strašných bolestiach, aké spôsoboval iným, dokončil svoj život vo vrchoch v cudzine najbiednejšou smrťou ten vrah a bohorúhač.
28 (KJV) Thus the murderer and blasphemer having suffered most grievously, as he entreated other men, so died he a miserable death in a strange country in the mountains.

29 (KAT) Jeho mŕtvolu vzal so sebou jeho miláčik Filip. On potom odišiel do Egypta k Ptolemeovi Filometorovi, lebo sa Antiochovho syna bál.
29 (KJV) And Philip, that was brought up with him, carried away his body, who also fearing the son of Antiochus went into Egypt to Ptolemeus Philometor.
