Then, when morning arrived, all the leaders of the priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus, so that they might deliver him to death.

Now Jesus stood before the procurator, and the procurator questioned him, saying, “You are the king of the Jews?” Jesus said to him, “You are saying so.”

Now on the solemn day, the procurator was accustomed to release to the people one prisoner, whomever they wished.

And at that time, he had a notorious prisoner, who was called Barabbas.

But the leaders of the priests and the elders persuaded the people, so that they would ask for Barabbas, and so that Jesus would perish.
Mk 15:11 - Then the chief priests incited the crowd, so that he would release Barabbas to them instead.
Lk 23:18 - But the entire crowd exclaimed together, saying: “Take this one, and release to us Barabbas!”
Jn 18:40 - Then they all cried out repeatedly, saying: “Not this one, but Barabbas.” Now Barabbas was a robber.

Then the soldiers of the procurator, taking Jesus up to the praetorium, gathered the entire cohort around him.

But as they were going out, they came upon a man of Cyrene, named Simon, whom they compelled to take up his cross.
Mk 15:21 - And they compelled a certain passerby, Simon the Cyrenian, who was arriving from the countryside, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to take up his cross.
Lk 23:26 - And as they were leading him away, they apprehended a certain one, Simon of Cyrene, as he was returning from the countryside. And they imposed the cross on him to carry after Jesus.

And they arrived at the place which is called Golgotha, which is the place of Calvary.

Mt 27,9-10 - Matúš tu spája dve proroctvá. Zachariáš hovorí o 30 strieborných (11, 12–13) a Jeremiáš o obraznom kupovaní. Vzťahuje ich na Krista a dáva ich pod meno známejšieho proroka Jeremiáša, a to azda aj preto, že na tomto mieste chcel viac zdôrazniť kúpu poľa ako jeho cenu.

Mt 27,27 - Rímsky vladár mal riadne sídlo v Cézarei. Na veľkonočné sviatky, asi z bezpečnostných dôvodov, došiel do Jeruzalema a sídlil v úradnej budove, "v pretóriu"; tam konával aj súdy.
Mt 27,32-34 - Mk 15, 21–32; Lk 23, 26–33; Jn 19, 17–27.
Mt 27,33 - Golgota je aramejské slovo vo význame lebka. Ľud nazýval to miesto "Lebkou", lebo sa podobalo ľudskej lebke.
Mt 27,34 - Ž 69, 22."Žlč" tu netreba rozumieť doslovne. Ide o istú horkú tekutinu (Mk 15, 23), ktorá mala odsúdeného na smrť omámiť, aby necítil hrozné bolesti. Preto Ježiš nápoj okúsil, ale ho neprijal, aby mohol trpieť naplno a pri jasnom vedomí.

Mt 27,61 - "Iná Mária," príbuzná Márii, Ježišovej matke, je Kleopasova manželka a matka Jakuba Mladšieho, Ježišovho "brata" (porov. 12, 46).
Mt 27,62 - Prípravným dňom sa volal deň pred sobotou (teda piatok), lebo v ten deň si pripravovali na sviatok všetko potrebné, najmä jedlá, aby podľa zákona nemuseli rušiť sobotňajší odpočinok.
