1 (KJV) The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem.
1 (ROH) Slová kazateľa, syna Dávidovho, kráľa v Jeruzaleme.
2 (KJV) Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity.
2 (ROH) Márnosť márností, riekol kazateľ; márnosť márností a všetko márnosť.
3 (KJV) What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun?
3 (ROH) Aký užitok má človek zo všetkej svojej trudnej práce, ktorou sa trudí pod slnkom?
4 (KJV) One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever.
4 (ROH) Pokolenie ide, a pokolenie prijde, a zem stojí na veky.
5 (KJV) The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he arose.
5 (ROH) A slnko vychádza a slnko zachádza a chvatom spiecha k svojemu miestu, kde zase vychádza.
6 (KJV) The wind goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it whirleth about continually, and the wind returneth again according to his circuits.
6 (ROH) Ide k poludniu a obracia sa k polnoci; obracajúc sa hneď sem hneď ta, tak ide ta vietor, a na svojich okruhoch zase sa navracia vietor.
7 (KJV) All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again.
7 (ROH) Všetky rieky tečú do mora, a more nie je preplnené; na to miesto, z ktorého tečú rieky, ta sa zase navracujú, aby zase tiekly.
8 (KJV) All things are full of labour; man cannot utter it: the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.
8 (ROH) Všetky veci sú plné trudu; nemohol by to človek vypovedať; oko sa nenasýti hľadenia, a ucho sa nenaplní počúvaním.
9 (KJV) The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.
9 (ROH) Čo bolo, to i bude, a čo sa dialo, to sa i bude diať, ani nieto ničoho nového pod slnkom.
10 (KJV) Is there any thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath been already of old time, which was before us.
10 (ROH) Ak i je nejaká vec, o ktorej niekto povie: Pozri, toto je nové, už to bolo dávno za vekov, ktoré boly pred nami.
11 (KJV) There is no remembrance of former things; neither shall there be any remembrance of things that are to come with those that shall come after.
11 (ROH) Nieto pamäti predošlým pokoleniam, ani budúcim, ktoré povstanú, nebude pamäti u tých, ktorí povstanú potom.
12 (KJV) I the Preacher was king over Israel in Jerusalem.
12 (ROH) Ja, kazateľ, som bol kráľom nad Izraelom v Jeruzaleme
13 (KJV) And I gave my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all things that are done under heaven: this sore travail hath God given to the sons of man to be exercised therewith.
13 (ROH) a priložil som svoje srdce k tomu, aby som hľadal a zkúmal v múdrosti všetko, čo sa deje pod nebom. Je to trudné zamestnanie, ktoré dal Bôh synom človeka, aby sa ním trápili.
14 (KJV) I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit.
14 (ROH) Videl som všetky skutky, ktoré sa dejú pod slnkom, a hľa, všetko je márnosť a honba po vetre.
15 (KJV) That which is crooked cannot be made straight: and that which is wanting cannot be numbered.
15 (ROH) To, čo je krivé, nedá sa narovnať, a nedostatok sa nedá vypočítať.
16 (KJV) I communed with mine own heart, saying, Lo, I am come to great estate, and have gotten more wisdom than all they that have been before me in Jerusalem: yea, my heart had great experience of wisdom and knowledge.
16 (ROH) Hovoril som so svojím srdcom a riekol som: Hľa, nadobudol som veľkej a vše väčšej múdrosti nad všetkých, ktorí boli predo mnou nad Jeruzalemom, a moje srdce videlo mnoho múdrosti a vedomosti,
17 (KJV) And I gave my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I perceived that this also is vexation of spirit.
17 (ROH) preto som priložil svoje srdce poznať múdrosť a poznať nerozum a bláznovstvo, ale som poznal, že aj to je shon po vetre;
18 (KJV) For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.
18 (ROH) lebo kde je mnoho múdrosti, tam i mnoho hnevu, a ten, kto rozmnožuje vedomosť, rozmnožuje bolesť.

Verš 9
The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.
Kaz 3:15 - That which hath been is now; and that which is to be hath already been; and God requireth that which is past.
Verš 2
Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity.
Ž 62:9 - Surely men of low degree are vanity, and men of high degree are a lie: to be laid in the balance, they are altogether lighter than vanity.
Ž 144:4 - Man is like to vanity: his days are as a shadow that passeth away.

What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun?
Kaz 2:22 - For what hath man of all his labour, and of the vexation of his heart, wherein he hath laboured under the sun?
Kaz 3:9 - What profit hath he that worketh in that wherein he laboureth?
Verš 4
One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever.
Ž 104:5 - Who laid the foundations of the earth, that it should not be removed for ever.
Verš 7
All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again.
Jób 38:8 - Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it brake forth, as if it had issued out of the womb?
Ž 104:9 - Thou hast set a bound that they may not pass over; that they turn not again to cover the earth.
Kaz 1,1 - Qohelet alebo Ecclesiastes (gr.): člen zhromaždenia (zhromaždenie – hebr. qahal, gr. ekklesía); znamená toho, kto hovorí – rečníka v zhromaždení (kazateľa), ktorý sa identifikuje s "kráľom nad Jeruzalemom". Ide tu o literárnu fikciu, ktorá za- mieňa autora so Šalamúnom, pretože sa preslávil múdrosťou (1 Kr 5,9–14).
Kaz 1,2 - "Márnosť" – hebrejsky hebel – znamená: vánok, dych, para a vôbec vec, ktorá rýchlo uniká, nemá dlhej stálosti.
Kaz 1,3 - "Pod slnkom – pod nebom", t. j. na tomto svete, v tomto časnom živote.
Kaz 1,4 - "Zem stojí naveky." Keď Sväté písmo hovorí o prírodných javoch, vyslovuje sa o nich neraz básnicky a iba podľa ľudových náhľadov, a nie teraz obvyklým vedeckým spôsobom.
Kaz 1,5 - "Ženie sa späť", podľa hebr. doslovne "túžobne sa hnať, žiadať si voľačo natoľko, že človek až dych tratí" (Jób 7,2). Možno, že v osnove pôvodne bolo "vracia sa" (podľa gr.).
Kaz 1,8 - Vg: Všetky veci unavujú človeka (ak pozoruje kolobeh mnohých prírodných javov).
Kaz 1,14 - Honba za vetrom: zhon za takou vecou, ktorú nemožno ani dohoniť, ani pevne uchytiť.
Kaz 1,16 - "Vzrástol som", podľa hebr. "rozmnožil som" (múdrosť svoju).
