1 (HEM) כי תשב ללחום את מושל בין תבין את אשר לפניך׃
1 (UKJV) When you sit to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is before you:

2 (HEM) ושמת שכין בלעך אם בעל נפש אתה׃
2 (UKJV) And put a knife to your throat, if you be a man given to appetite.

3 (HEM) אל תתאו למטעמותיו והוא לחם כזבים׃
3 (UKJV) Be not desirous of his dainties: for they are deceitful food.

4 (HEM) אל תיגע להעשיר מבינתך חדל׃
4 (UKJV) Labour not to be rich: cease from your own wisdom.

5 (HEM) התעוף עיניך בו ואיננו כי עשה יעשה לו כנפים כנשר ועיף השמים׃
5 (UKJV) "Will you set your eyes upon that which is not? for riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven. "

6 (HEM) אל תלחם את לחם רע עין ואל תתאו למטעמתיו׃
6 (UKJV) Eat you not the bread of him that has an evil eye, neither desire you his dainty meats:

7 (HEM) כי כמו שער בנפשו כן הוא אכל ושתה יאמר לך ולבו בל עמך׃
7 (UKJV) "For as he thinks in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, says he to you; but his heart is not with you. "

8 (HEM) פתך אכלת תקיאנה ושחת דבריך הנעימים׃
8 (UKJV) The morsel which you have eaten shall you vomit up, and lose your sweet words.

9 (HEM) באזני כסיל אל תדבר כי יבוז לשכל מליך׃
9 (UKJV) Speak not in the ears of a fool: for he will despise the wisdom of your words.

10 (HEM) אל תסג גבול עולם ובשדי יתומים אל תבא׃
10 (UKJV) "Remove not the old landmark; and enter not into the fields of the fatherless: "

11 (HEM) כי גאלם חזק הוא יריב את ריבם אתך׃
11 (UKJV) "For their redeemer is mighty; he shall plead their cause with you. "

12 (HEM) הביאה למוסר לבך ואזנך לאמרי דעת׃
12 (UKJV) Apply your heart unto instruction, and your ears to the words of knowledge.

13 (HEM) אל תמנע מנער מוסר כי תכנו בשבט לא ימות׃
13 (UKJV) Withhold not correction from the child: for if you beat him with the rod, he shall not die.

14 (HEM) אתה בשבט תכנו ונפשו משאול תציל׃
14 (UKJV) You shall beat him with the rod, and shall deliver his soul from hell.

15 (HEM) בני אם חכם לבך ישמח לבי גם אני׃
15 (UKJV) My son, if your heart be wise, my heart shall rejoice, even mine.

16 (HEM) ותעלזנה כליותי בדבר שפתיך מישרים׃
16 (UKJV) Yea, my reins shall rejoice, when your lips speak right things.

17 (HEM) אל יקנא לבך בחטאים כי אם ביראת יהוה כל היום׃
17 (UKJV) Let not your heart envy sinners: but be you in the fear of the LORD all the day long.

18 (HEM) כי אם יש אחרית ותקותך לא תכרת׃
18 (UKJV) "For surely there is an end; and your expectation shall not be cut off. "

19 (HEM) שמע אתה בני וחכם ואשר בדרך לבך׃
19 (UKJV) Hear you, my son, and be wise, and guide your heart in the way.

20 (HEM) אל תהי בסבאי יין בזללי בשר למו׃
20 (UKJV) "Be not among winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh: "

21 (HEM) כי סבא וזולל יורש וקרעים תלביש נומה׃
21 (UKJV) For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.

22 (HEM) שמע לאביך זה ילדך ואל תבוז כי זקנה אמך׃
22 (UKJV) Hearken unto your father that brings forth you, and despise not your mother when she is old.

23 (HEM) אמת קנה ואל תמכר חכמה ומוסר ובינה׃
23 (UKJV) "Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding. "

24 (HEM) גול יגול אבי צדיק יולד חכם וישמח בו׃
24 (UKJV) The father of the righteous shall greatly rejoice: and he that bring forths a wise child shall have joy of him.

25 (HEM) ישמח אביך ואמך ותגל יולדתך׃
25 (UKJV) Your father and your mother shall be glad, and she that bare you shall rejoice.

26 (HEM) תנה בני לבך לי ועיניך דרכי תרצנה׃
26 (UKJV) My son, give me your heart, and let your eyes observe my ways.

27 (HEM) כי שוחה עמקה זונה ובאר צרה נכריה׃
27 (UKJV) "For a whore is a deep ditch; and a strange woman is a narrow pit. "

28 (HEM) אף היא כחתף תארב ובוגדים באדם תוסף׃
28 (UKJV) She also lies in wait as for a prey, and increases the transgressors among men.

29 (HEM) למי אוי למי אבוי למי מדונים למי שיח למי פצעים חנם למי חכללות עינים׃
29 (UKJV) Who has woe? who has sorrow? who has contentions? who has babbling? who has wounds without cause? who has redness of eyes?

30 (HEM) למאחרים על היין לבאים לחקר ממסך׃
30 (UKJV) "They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine. "

31 (HEM) אל תרא יין כי יתאדם כי יתן בכיס עינו יתהלך במישרים׃
31 (UKJV) Look not you upon the wine when it is red, when it gives his colour in the cup, when it moves itself aright.

32 (HEM) אחריתו כנחש ישך וכצפעני יפרש׃
32 (UKJV) At the last it bites like a serpent, and stings like an adder.

33 (HEM) עיניך יראו זרות ולבך ידבר תהפכות׃
33 (UKJV) your eyes shall behold strange women, and your heart shall utter perverse things.

34 (HEM) והיית כשכב בלב ים וכשכב בראש חבל׃
34 (UKJV) Yea, you shall be as he that lies down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lies upon the top of a mast.

35 (HEM) הכוני בל חליתי הלמוני בל ידעתי מתי אקיץ אוסיף אבקשנו עוד׃
35 (UKJV) "They have stricken me, shall you say, and I was not sick; they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again. "
