Prís 20, 1-30

1 (CPDV) It is a luxurious thing, wine, and inebriation is tumultuous. Anyone who is delighted by this will not be wise.
1 (HEM) לץ היין המה שכר וכל שגה בו לא יחכם׃

2 (CPDV) Just like the roaring of a lion, so also is the dread of a king. Whoever provokes him sins in his own soul.
2 (HEM) נהם ככפיר אימת מלך מתעברו חוטא נפשו׃

3 (CPDV) Honor is for the man who separates himself from contentions. But all the foolish meddle in altercations.
3 (HEM) כבוד לאיש שבת מריב וכל אויל יתגלע׃

4 (CPDV) Because of the cold, the lazy one was 352 not willing to plough. Therefore, in the summer, he will beg, and it will not be given to him.
4 (HEM) מחרף עצל לא יחרש ישאל בקציר ואין׃

5 (CPDV) Counsel in the heart of a man is like deep waters. But a wise man will draw it out.
5 (HEM) מים עמקים עצה בלב איש ואיש תבונה ידלנה׃

6 (CPDV) Many men are called merciful. But who will find a faithful man?

7 (CPDV) The just who walks in his simplicity shall leave behind him blessed sons.

8 (CPDV) The king who sits on the throne of judgment scatters all evil with his gaze.
8 (HEM) מלך יושב על כסא דין מזרה בעיניו כל רע׃

9 (CPDV) Who is able to say: “My heart is clean. I am pure from sin?”
9 (HEM) מי יאמר זכיתי לבי טהרתי מחטאתי׃

10 (CPDV) Diverse weights, diverse measures: both are abominable with God.
10 (HEM) אבן ואבן איפה ואיפה תועבת יהוה גם שניהם׃

11 (CPDV) A child may be understood by his interests: whether his works may be clean and upright.
11 (HEM) גם במעלליו יתנכר נער אם זך ואם ישר פעלו׃

12 (CPDV) The hearing ear and the seeing eye: the Lord has made them both.
12 (HEM) אזן שמעת ועין ראה יהוה עשה גם שניהם׃

13 (CPDV) Do not love sleep, lest deprivation oppress you. Open your eyes and be satisfied with bread.
13 (HEM) אל תאהב שנה פן תורש פקח עיניך שבע לחם׃

14 (CPDV) “It is bad, it is bad,” says every buyer; and when he has withdrawn, then he will boast.
14 (HEM) רע רע יאמר הקונה ואזל לו אז יתהלל׃

15 (CPDV) There is gold, and there are a multitude of jewels. But lips of knowledge are a precious vessel.
15 (HEM) יש זהב ורב פנינים וכלי יקר שפתי דעת׃

16 (CPDV) Take away the vestments of him who stands up to vouch for a stranger, and take a pledge from him instead of from outsiders.
16 (HEM) לקח בגדו כי ערב זר ובעד נכרים חבלהו׃

17 (CPDV) The bread of lies is sweet to a man. But afterwards, his mouth will be filled with pebbles.
17 (HEM) ערב לאיש לחם שקר ואחר ימלא פיהו חצץ׃

18 (CPDV) Plans are strengthened by counsels. And wars are to be handled by governments.
18 (HEM) מחשבות בעצה תכון ובתחבלות עשה מלחמה׃

19 (CPDV) Do not become involved with him who reveals mysteries, and who walks deceitfully, and who enlarges his lips.
19 (HEM) גולה סוד הולך רכיל ולפתה שפתיו לא תתערב׃

20 (CPDV) Whoever curses his father and mother, his lamp will be extinguished in the midst of darkness.
20 (HEM) מקלל אביו ואמו ידעך נרו באישון חשך׃

21 (CPDV) When an inheritance is obtained hastily in the beginning, in the end it will be without a blessing.
21 (HEM) נחלה מבחלת בראשנה ואחריתה לא תברך׃

22 (CPDV) Do not say, “I will repay evil.” Wait for the Lord, and he will free you.
22 (HEM) אל תאמר אשלמה רע קוה ליהוה וישע לך׃

23 (CPDV) Diverse weights are an abomination with the Lord. A deceitful balance is not good.
23 (HEM) תועבת יהוה אבן ואבן ומאזני מרמה לא טוב׃

24 (CPDV) The steps of men are directed by the Lord. But who is the man able to understand his own way?
24 (HEM) מיהוה מצעדי גבר ואדם מה יבין דרכו׃

25 (CPDV) It is ruin for a man to devour what is holy, or, after making vows, to retract them.
25 (HEM) מוקש אדם ילע קדש ואחר נדרים לבקר׃

26 (CPDV) A wise king scatters the impious and bends an archway over them.
26 (HEM) מזרה רשעים מלך חכם וישב עליהם אופן׃

27 (CPDV) The spirit of a man is a lamp to the Lord, which investigates all the secrets of the inner self.
27 (HEM) נר יהוה נשמת אדם חפש כל חדרי בטן׃

28 (CPDV) Mercy and truth guard the king, and his throne is strengthened by clemency.
28 (HEM) חסד ואמת יצרו מלך וסעד בחסד כסאו׃

29 (CPDV) The joy of youths is their strength. And the dignity of old men is their grey hairs.
29 (HEM) תפארת בחורים כחם והדר זקנים שיבה׃

30 (CPDV) The bruise of a wound, as well as scourges, shall wipe away evils in the more secret places of the inner self.

Verš 2
Just like the roaring of a lion, so also is the dread of a king. Whoever provokes him sins in his own soul.
Prís 16:14 - The indignation of a king is a herald of death. And the wise man will appease it.
Prís 19:12 - Like the roaring of a lion, so also is the wrath of a king. And his cheerfulness is like the dew upon the grass.

Honor is for the man who separates himself from contentions. But all the foolish meddle in altercations.
Prís 17:14 - Whoever releases the water is the head of the conflict. And just before he suffers contempt, he abandons judgment.

Diverse weights, diverse measures: both are abominable with God.
Prís 20:23 - Diverse weights are an abomination with the Lord. A deceitful balance is not good.
Dt 25:13 - You shall not have differing weights, greater and lesser, in your bag.
Prís 11:1 - A deceitful scale is an abomination with the Lord, and a fair weighing is his will.

Verš 12
The hearing ear and the seeing eye: the Lord has made them both.
Ex 4:11 - The Lord said to him: “Who made the mouth of man? And who has formed the mute and the deaf, the seeing and the blind? Was it not I?
Ž 94:9 - as in the provocation, according to the day of temptation in the wilderness, where your fathers tempted me; they tested me, though they had seen my works.

Do not love sleep, lest deprivation oppress you. Open your eyes and be satisfied with bread.
Prís 19:15 - Laziness sends one into a deep sleep, and a dissolute soul will go hungry.

Take away the vestments of him who stands up to vouch for a stranger, and take a pledge from him instead of from outsiders.
Prís 11:15 - He will be afflicted with evil, who provides a guarantee for an outsider. But whoever is wary of traps shall be secure.
Prís 27:13 - Take away the garment of him who has vouched for an outsider. And take a pledge from him on behalf of foreigners.

Verš 19
Do not become involved with him who reveals mysteries, and who walks deceitfully, and who enlarges his lips.
Prís 11:13 - Whoever walks dishonestly reveals secrets. But whoever is of a faithful soul conceals what is confided by a friend.

Verš 20
Whoever curses his father and mother, his lamp will be extinguished in the midst of darkness.
Ex 21:17 - Whoever speaks evil of his father or mother shall die a death.
Lv 20:9 - Whoever curses his father or mother shall die a death; he has cursed his father and mother. So let his blood be upon him.
Dt 27:16 - Cursed be he who does not honor his father and mother. And all the people shall say: Amen.
Mt 15:4 - ‘Honor your father and mother,’ and, ‘Whoever will have cursed father or mother shall die a death.’

Verš 21
When an inheritance is obtained hastily in the beginning, in the end it will be without a blessing.
Prís 13:11 - Substance obtained in haste will be diminished. But what is collected by hand, little by little, shall be multiplied.
Prís 28:20 - A faithful man shall be greatly praised. But whoever rushes to become rich will not be innocent.

Verš 22
Do not say, “I will repay evil.” Wait for the Lord, and he will free you.
Dt 32:35 - Vengeance is mine, and I will repay them in due time, so that their foot may slip and fall. The day of perdition is near, and the time rushes to appear.’
Prís 17:13 - Whoever repays evil for good, evil shall not withdraw from his house.
Prís 24:29 - Do not say, “I will do to him as he has done to me.” I will repay each one according to his work.
Rim 12:17 - Render to no one harm for harm. Provide good things, not only in the sight of God, but also in the sight of all men.

The joy of youths is their strength. And the dignity of old men is their grey hairs.
