Prís 1, 1-33

1 (VUL) Parabolae Salomonis filii David regis Israel
1 (UKJV) "The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel; "

2 (VUL) ad sciendam sapientiam et disciplinam, ad intellegenda verba prudentiae;
2 (UKJV) "To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding; "

3 (UKJV) "To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity; "

4 (UKJV) To give subtlety to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion.

5 (VUL) Audiat sapiens et addet doctrinam, et intellegens dispositiones possidebit:
5 (UKJV) "A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels: "

6 (VUL) animadvertet parabolam et allegoriam, verba sapientium et aenigmata eorum.
6 (UKJV) "To understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings. "

7 (VUL) Timor Domini principium scientiae. Sapientiam atque doctrinam stulti despiciunt.
7 (UKJV) The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

8 (UKJV) My son, hear the instruction of your father, and forsake not the law of your mother:

9 (VUL) quia diadema gratiae sunt capiti tuo, et torques collo tuo.
9 (UKJV) For they shall be an ornament of grace unto your head, and chains about your neck.

10 (UKJV) My son, if sinners entice you, consent you not.

11 (VUL) Si dixerint: “ Veni nobiscum, insidiemur sanguini, abscondamus tendiculas contra insontem frustra;
11 (UKJV) If they say, Come with us, let us lay wait for blood, let us lurk privately for the innocent without cause:

12 (VUL) deglutiamus eos sicut infernus viventes et integros quasi descendentes in lacum:
12 (UKJV) "Let us swallow them up alive as the grave; and whole, as those that go down into the pit: "

13 (VUL) omnem pretiosam substantiam reperiemus, implebimus domos nostras spoliis;
13 (UKJV) We shall find all precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil:

14 (VUL) sortem mitte nobiscum, marsupium unum sit omnium nostrum ”;
14 (UKJV) "Cast in your lot among us; let us all have one purse: "

15 (VUL) fili mi, ne ambules cum eis, prohibe pedem tuum a semitis eorum.
15 (UKJV) "My son, walk not you in the way with them; refrain your foot from their path: "

16 (UKJV) For their feet run to evil, and make haste to shed blood.

17 (VUL) Frustra autem iacitur rete ante oculos pinnatorum.
17 (UKJV) Surely in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird.

18 (VUL) Ipsique contra sanguinem suum insidiantur et moliuntur fraudes contra animas suas.
18 (UKJV) "And they lay wait for their own blood; they lurk privately for their own lives. "

19 (VUL) Sic semitae omnis ad rapinam intenti: animam ipsius possidentis rapiunt.
19 (UKJV) "So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain; which takes away the life of the owners thereof. "

20 (VUL) Sapientia foris praedicat, in plateis dat vocem suam,
20 (UKJV) "Wisdom cries without; she utters her voice in the streets: "

21 (VUL) in capite viarum frequentium clamitat, in foribus portarum urbis profert verba sua:
21 (UKJV) She cries in the chief place of concourse, in the openings of the gates: in the city she utters her words, saying,

22 (VUL) “ Usquequo, parvuli, diligitis infantiam, et derisores sibi derisionem cupient, et imprudentes odibunt scientiam?
22 (UKJV) How long, all of you simple ones, will all of you love simplicity? and the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge?

23 (VUL) Convertimini ad correptionem meam; en proferam vobis spiritum meum et ostendam vobis verba mea.
23 (UKJV) Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you.

24 (VUL) Quia vocavi, et renuistis, extendi manum meam, et non fuit qui aspiceret;
24 (UKJV) "Because I have called, and all of you refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded; "

25 (VUL) despexistis omne consilium meum et increpationes meas neglexistis.
25 (UKJV) But all of you have set at nothing all my counsel, and refused my reproof:

26 (VUL) Ego quoque in interitu vestro ridebo et subsannabo, cum terror vobis advenerit,
26 (UKJV) "I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear comes; "

27 (UKJV) "When your fear comes as desolation, and your destruction comes as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish comes upon you. "

28 (VUL) Tunc invocabunt me, et non exaudiam, instanter quaerent me et non invenient me,
28 (UKJV) "Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me: "

29 (UKJV) For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD:

30 (VUL) nec acquieverint consilio meo et despexerint universam correptionem meam.
30 (UKJV) They refused my counsel: they despised all my reproof.

31 (VUL) Comedent igitur fructus viae suae suisque consiliis saturabuntur.
31 (UKJV) Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices.

32 (VUL) Aversio parvulorum interficiet eos, et securitas stultorum perdet illos.
32 (UKJV) For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them.

33 (VUL) Qui autem me audierit, absque terrore requiescet et tranquillus erit timore malorum sublato.
33 (UKJV) But whoso hearkens unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil.

Pris 1,1-6 - Prvá čiastka knihy (1,1 – 9,18) predstavuje všeobecný úvod, ktorý k jadru celej knihy (k jednotlivým prísloviam a naučeniam v ďalších častiach) napísal ich redaktor. 3,27–30 a i.).Za nadpisom (1) spisovateľ uvádza hneď účel tejto zbierky prísloví.
