1 Ex 1, 1 These are the names of the sons of Israel, who went into Egypt with Jacob. They entered, each one with his house: 2 Ex 1, 2 Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, 3 Ex 1, 3 Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin, 4 Ex 1, 4 Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher. 5 Ex 1, 5 Therefore, all the souls of those who went forth from Jacob’s thigh were seventy. Now Joseph was in Egypt. 6 Ex 1, 6 When he had died, along with all of his brothers and all of that generation, 7 Ex 1, 7 the sons of Israel increased, and they multiplied like seedlings. And having been strengthened exceedingly, they filled the land. 8 Ex 1, 8 Meanwhile, there arose a new king over Egypt, who was ignorant of Joseph. 9 Ex 1, 9 And he said to his people: “Behold, the people of the sons of Israel are many, and they are stronger than we are. 10 Ex 1, 10 Come, let us wisely oppress them, lest they multiply; and if any war 31 should advance against us, they may be added to our enemies, and having fought against us, they might depart from the land.” 11 Ex 1, 11 And so he set over them masters of the works, in order to afflict them with burdens. And they built for Pharaoh the cities of the tabernacles: Pithom and Raamses. 12 Ex 1, 12 And the more they oppressed them, so much more did they multiply and increase. 13 Ex 1, 13 And the Egyptians hated the sons of Israel, and they afflicted them and mocked them. 14 Ex 1, 14 And they led their life directly into bitterness, with hard work in clay and brick, and with all kinds of servitude, so that they were being overwhelmed with the works of the land. 15 Ex 1, 15 Then the king of Egypt spoke to the midwives of the Hebrews, (one of whom one was called Shiphrah, another Puah) 16 Ex 1, 16 instructing them: “When you will act as a midwife to the Hebrew women, and the time of delivery has arrived: if it is male, put it to death; if it is female, retain it.” 17 Ex 1, 17 But the midwives feared God, and so they did not act according to the precept of the king of Egypt, but they kept the males safe. 18 Ex 1, 18 And summoning them, the king said, “What did you intend to do, so that you would save the boys?” 19 Ex 1, 19 They responded: “The Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women. For they themselves have the wisdom of a midwife, and so they give birth before we can come to them.” 20 Ex 1, 20 Therefore, God acted favorably toward the midwives. And the people increased, and they were strengthened exceedingly. 21 Ex 1, 21 And because the midwives feared God, he built houses for them. 22 Ex 1, 22 Therefore, Pharaoh instructed all his people, saying: “Whatever will be born of the male sex, cast it into the river; whatever will be born of the female sex, retain it.”

Verš 1
These are the names of the sons of Israel, who went into Egypt with Jacob. They entered, each one with his house:
Gn 46:8 - Now these are the names of the sons of Israel, who entered into Egypt, he with his children. The firstborn is Reuben.
Ex 6:14 - These are the leaders of the houses by their families. The sons of Reuben, the firstborn of Israel: Hanoch and Pallu, Hezron and Carmi.

Therefore, all the souls of those who went forth from Jacob’s thigh were seventy. Now Joseph was in Egypt.
Gn 46:27 - Now the sons of Joseph, who were born to him in the land of Egypt, were two souls. All the souls of the house of Jacob, who went into Egypt, were seventy.
Dt 10:22 - As seventy souls, your fathers descended into Egypt. And now, behold, the Lord your God has multiplied you to be like the stars of heaven.”
Sk 7:14 - Then Joseph sent for and brought his father Jacob, with all his kindred, seventy-five souls.

Dt 26:5 - And you shall say, in the sight of the Lord your God: ‘The Syrian pursued my father, who descended into Egypt, and he sojourned there in a very small number, and he increased into a great and strong nation and into an innumerable multitude.

Meanwhile, there arose a new king over Egypt, who was ignorant of Joseph.

Therefore, Pharaoh instructed all his people, saying: “Whatever will be born of the male sex, cast it into the river; whatever will be born of the female sex, retain it.”

Ex 1,1-6 - Ako je zjavné aj z Knihy Genezis, Izraeliti boli presvedčení, že v Egypte neostanú natrvalo. Ich zraky sa ustavične upierali na Kanaán. Veď Boh Abrahámovi prisľúbil, že jeho potomstvo dostane Kanaán do vlastníctva (Gn 12,7; 13,15), aj mu oznámil, že jeho potomkovia budú žiť v cudzej krajine, kde ich budú utláčať (Gn 15,13); poroba však nebude trvať dlho a oni sa vrátia do svojej krajiny (Gn 15,13.14). O návrate do kanaánskej krajiny bol presvedčený aj Jozef. Pred svojou smrťou vyslovil žiadosť, aby jeho kosti preniesli do zasľúbenej zeme (Gn 50,24). O pobyte Izraelitov v Egypte má Písmo len skromné záznamy a vonkoncom neuvádza dejiny temer za štyristo rokov. Čas od Jozefa po Mojžiša je nám celkom neznámy. Za tieto štyri storočia Jakubova rodina vzrástla v národ, prostredníctvom ktorého Boh uskutoční svoj zámer skrze Syna svojho spasiť ľudstvo. Izraeliti žili v Egypte pospolu, skoro odlúčení od pohanov a takto mohli zachovať svoje náboženstvo čisté a neporušené. Poroba Izraela má tiež svoj význam. Veď bieda učí modliť sa. V nešťastí spomínali si na svojho Boha, Pána, ktorý patriarchom preukázal takú lásku a ochranu. Obrat "mená Izraelových synov" označuje už národ, izraelský národ. Uvádzajú sa mená Jakubových synov, aby sa videlo, z akých nepatrných začiatkov vznikol vyvolený národ, ako Boh splnil svoj prísľub, ktorý dal patriarchom.
Ex 1,8 - Pravdepodobne bol ním Ramesse II. z 19. dynastie, ktorý vládol do roku 1235 pr. Kr.
Ex 1,11 - Obe mestá sú v severnom Egypte, skoro na hranici Egypta. Bolo ich treba opevniť, najmä keď hrozilo nebezpečenstvo od severovýchodu. Stavali sa v nich aj zásobárne pre obilie a zbrane, aby všetko bolo pripravené pre bojovú výpravu do Sýrie.
Ex 1,14 - Okrem stavieb Izraeliti mali na starosti aj prípravu stavebného materiálu. Robili tehly z nílskeho bahna, pomiešaného so slamou. Pracovali na poliach, zavodňovali, siali, orali a žali. Poľná práca je v Egypte veľmi ťažká, človek sa na hroznej horúčave ihneď vysilí.
