Z 89 - Autor tohto vážneho, rozjímavého, nábožensko-poučného žalmu ("maškíl") má pravdepodobne tesne pred exilom pred očami smutný údel Dávidovho kráľovského domu a porovnáva ho so slávnymi prisľúbeniami, ktoré dal kedysi Pán Dávidovi.
Z 89,11 - "Rahaba si pošliapal" - tieto slová možno rozumieť o "oblude", ktorá tu predstavuje pýchu a vzburu (hebr. "ráchab - podráždiť, vzbĺknuť, búriť sa"), alebo o nepriateľoch, s ktorými Boh bojuje (Ž 74,13; Jób 9,13; 26,12; Iz 51,9); na niektorých miestach Písma "Rahab" označuje Egypt, proti ktorému Pán bojoval desiatimi ranami (porov. Ž 87,4).
Z 89,20 - "Svojim svätým" - to je Nátan a Dávid so svojím ľudom. Je dosť možné, že pôvodne sa v osnove čítalo "svojmu svätému - hásidoka", teda Nátanovi.
Z 89,26 - "More" Stredozemné, "rieka" Eufrat. Proroctvo hovorí o univerzálnom kráľovstve Mesiáša - Dávidovho syna.
Z 89,30 - Dávidov trón bude trvať ako "dni nebies", čo je to isté ako večne, dokiaľ budú existovať nebesá (2 Sam 7,16; Ž 72,5 atď. ). Dávidov trón je večný len v Cirkvi, len Mesiáš je večným kráľom.
Z 89,31-34 - Potomstvo a kráľovstvo bude v Mesiášovi večné, takto nikdy nebude koniec Dávidovmu kráľovstvu. Lež šťastie a hmotný blahobyt závisia od dodržania Božích príkazov a nariadení.
Z 89,38 - Mesiac u Hebrejov slúžil za symbol Božej nezlomnej vernosti.
Z 89,46 - "Skrátil si dni jeho mladosti" - tu nejde o Dávidove dni, ale o dni Dávidovho kráľovstva, ktoré malo byť večné, ale veľmi rýchle zostarlo, už ide zahynúť a jeho zánik je potupný.
Z 89,47-52 - V týchto slovách, ktoré sú doslovným citátom Ž 79,5, žalmista vyslovuje túžbu a nádej, že Boh ešte za jeho života odníme nešťastie a poníženie z Dávidovho kráľovského rodu.
Z 89,53 - Verš je doxológiou, chválospevom na Pána a ukončieva 3. knihu žalmov. Porov. Ž 41,14; a 72,18.19.
