Kniha Jób

1 (KJV) I made a covenant with mine eyes; why then should I think upon a maid?
1 (B21) Vstoupil jsem do smlouvy se svýma očima, že se nebudu dívat po dívkách.

2 (KJV) For what portion of God is there from above? and what inheritance of the Almighty from on high?
2 (B21) Vždyť jaký úděl Bůh z nebe udílí, jaké dává Všemohoucí shůry dědictví,

3 (KJV) Is not destruction to the wicked? and a strange punishment to the workers of iniquity?
3 (B21) ne-li neštěstí pro zlosyna, ne-li pohromu pachatelům zla?

4 (KJV) Doth not he see my ways, and count all my steps?
4 (B21) Copak Bůh nehledí na mé cesty, copak nepočítá všechny mé kroky?

5 (KJV) If I have walked with vanity, or if my foot hath hasted to deceit;
5 (B21) Jestli jsem v životě jednal falešně, jestli jsem kdy pospíchal konat lest -

6 (KJV) Let me be weighed in an even balance, that God may know mine integrity.
6 (B21) pak ať mě Bůh zváží na váze poctivé, ať se ubezpečí o mé nevině!

7 (KJV) If my step hath turned out of the way, and mine heart walked after mine eyes, and if any blot hath cleaved to mine hands;
7 (B21) Jestli má noha z cesty zabloudila, jestli mé srdce odešlo za očima, jestli mi na rukou špína ulpěla -

8 (KJV) Then let me sow, and let another eat; yea, let my offspring be rooted out.
8 (B21) pak ať co zaseji, sní někdo jiný, ať jsou mé ratolesti vykořeněny!

9 (KJV) If mine heart have been deceived by a woman, or if I have laid wait at my neighbour's door;
9 (B21) Jestli jsem se v srdci dal něčí ženou svést, jestli jsem číhal u dveří přítele -

10 (KJV) Then let my wife grind unto another, and let others bow down upon her.
10 (B21) pak ať má žena pro jiného mele, ať s ní jdou jiní do postele!

11 (KJV) For this is an heinous crime; yea, it is an iniquity to be punished by the judges.
11 (B21) Byl by to přece zvrhlý zločin, byl by to trestuhodný hřích,

12 (KJV) For it is a fire that consumeth to destruction, and would root out all mine increase.
12 (B21) byl by to oheň k záhubě spalující, vykořenil by vše, co pěstuji!

13 (KJV) If I did despise the cause of my manservant or of my maidservant, when they contended with me;
13 (B21) Copak jsem svému služebníku odepřel právo nebo své služebnici, když měli se mnou spor?

14 (KJV) What then shall I do when God riseth up? and when he visiteth, what shall I answer him?
14 (B21) Co bych si pak počal Bohu tváří v tvář? Co bych mu odpověděl, až se mě bude ptát?

15 (KJV) Did not he that made me in the womb make him? and did not one fashion us in the womb?
15 (B21) Nestvořil je v břiše Ten, který stvořil mě? Nezformoval nás jeden a týž v lůně matčině?

16 (KJV) If I have withheld the poor from their desire, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail;
16 (B21) Copak jsem nevnímal potřeby chudých, nechal jsem pohasínat oči vdovy?

17 (KJV) Or have eaten my morsel myself alone, and the fatherless hath not eaten thereof;
17 (B21) Copak jsem jedl svůj chléb sám a sirotkům z něj nedával?

18 (KJV) (For from my youth he was brought up with me, as with a father, and I have guided her from my mother's womb;)
18 (B21) Od mého mládí u mě jak u otce vyrůstal, od svého dětství jsem vdovám pomáhal.

19 (KJV) If I have seen any perish for want of clothing, or any poor without covering;
19 (B21) Copak jsem přihlížel, jak někdo zmírá bez šatů, jak ubožák nemá ani přikrývku?

20 (KJV) If his loins have not blessed me, and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my sheep;
20 (B21) Copak mi takový ze srdce nežehnal, když se vlnou mých ovcí zahříval?

21 (KJV) If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, when I saw my help in the gate:
21 (B21) Jestli má ruka někdy napadla sirotka, protože jsem viděl, že soud na mě dá -

22 (KJV) Then let mine arm fall from my shoulder blade, and mine arm be broken from the bone.
22 (B21) pak ať mi vyrvou paži z ramena, ať je má ruka v lokti zlomena!

23 (KJV) For destruction from God was a terror to me, and by reason of his highness I could not endure.
23 (B21) Božího trestu jsem se přece bál, před jeho vznešeností bych neobstál!

24 (KJV) If I have made gold my hope, or have said to the fine gold, Thou art my confidence;
24 (B21) Copak jsem snad kdy doufal ve zlato, nazýval jsem drahý kov svou jistotou?

25 (KJV) If I rejoiced because my wealth was great, and because mine hand had gotten much;
25 (B21) Copak mě těšilo, jak velké jmění mám a kolik toho svou rukou vydělám?

26 (KJV) If I beheld the sun when it shined, or the moon walking in brightness;
26 (B21) Copak jsem obdivoval zářící slunce a měsíc putující ve své nádheře,

27 (KJV) And my heart hath been secretly enticed, or my mouth hath kissed my hand:
27 (B21) takže bych se v srdci dal tajně svést a rukou jim od úst poslal polibek?

28 (KJV) This also were an iniquity to be punished by the judge: for I should have denied the God that is above.
28 (B21) I to by byl přece trestuhodný hřích, zrazoval bych tím Boha na nebi!

29 (KJV) If I rejoiced at the destruction of him that hated me, or lifted up myself when evil found him:
29 (B21) Copak mě těšilo neštěstí nepřítele, copak jsem jásal, když se mu vedlo zle?

30 (KJV) Neither have I suffered my mouth to sin by wishing a curse to his soul.
30 (B21) Svá ústa jsem nikdy nenechal hřešit tím, že bych na něj svolával kletby.

31 (KJV) If the men of my tabernacle said not, Oh that we had of his flesh! we cannot be satisfied.
31 (B21) Copak si mí domácí museli stěžovat: ‚Kéž by nám dal trochu masa; máme hlad'?

32 (KJV) The stranger did not lodge in the street: but I opened my doors to the traveller.
32 (B21) Vždyť ani cizinec nemusel venku nocovat, své dveře jsem pocestnému otvíral dokořán.

33 (KJV) If I covered my transgressions as Adam, by hiding mine iniquity in my bosom:
33 (B21) Copak jsem jako Adam skrýval své přestupky? Chtěl jsem svou vinu v srdci utajit?

34 (KJV) Did I fear a great multitude, or did the contempt of families terrify me, that I kept silence, and went not out of the door?
34 (B21) Měl jsem snad strach před hlučícím davem, bál jsem se posměchu svého kmene, takže jsem mlčel a ani nevycházel ven?

35 (KJV) Oh that one would hear me! behold, my desire is, that the Almighty would answer me, and that mine adversary had written a book.
35 (B21) Kéž by mi někdo poskytl slyšení! Zde je můj podpis. Ať mi Všemohoucí odpoví! Ať můj žalobce předloží svůj spis!

36 (KJV) Surely I would take it upon my shoulder, and bind it as a crown to me.
36 (B21) Rád ho budu nosit na vlastních ramenou, ozdobím se jím jako korunou!

37 (KJV) I would declare unto him the number of my steps; as a prince would I go near unto him.
37 (B21) Všechny své kroky před ním rád vypovím, předstoupím před něj jako princ!

38 (KJV) If my land cry against me, or that the furrows likewise thereof complain;
38 (B21) Jestli má půda křičí proti mně a její brázdy pláčí společně,

39 (KJV) If I have eaten the fruits thereof without money, or have caused the owners thereof to lose their life:
39 (B21) jestli jsem její plody jedl bezplatně a mořil její nájemce -

40 (KJV) Let thistles grow instead of wheat, and cockle instead of barley. The words of Job are ended.
40 (B21) pak ať mi vzejde bodláčí místo pšenice a plevel místo ječmene!"
