1 (HEM) ויהי כל הארץ שפה אחת ודברים אחדים׃
1 (UKJV) And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech.
2 (HEM) ויהי בנסעם מקדם וימצאו בקעה בארץ שנער וישבו שם׃
2 (UKJV) "And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there. "
3 (HEM) ויאמרו איש אל רעהו הבה נלבנה לבנים ונשרפה לשרפה ותהי להם הלבנה לאבן והחמר היה להם לחמר׃
3 (UKJV) And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them thoroughly. And they had brick for stone, and bitumen had they for mortar.
4 (HEM) ויאמרו הבה נבנה לנו עיר ומגדל וראשו בשמים ונעשה לנו שם פן נפוץ על פני כל הארץ׃
4 (UKJV) "And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth. "
5 (HEM) וירד יהוה לראת את העיר ואת המגדל אשר בנו בני האדם׃
5 (UKJV) And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men built.
6 (HEM) ויאמר יהוה הן עם אחד ושפה אחת לכלם וזה החלם לעשות ועתה לא יבצר מהם כל אשר יזמו לעשות׃
6 (UKJV) "And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do. "
7 (HEM) הבה נרדה ונבלה שם שפתם אשר לא ישמעו איש שפת רעהו׃
7 (UKJV) Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech.
8 (HEM) ויפץ יהוה אתם משם על פני כל הארץ ויחדלו לבנת העיר׃
8 (UKJV) So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city.
9 (HEM) על כן קרא שמה בבל כי שם בלל יהוה שפת כל הארץ ומשם הפיצם יהוה על פני כל הארץ׃
9 (UKJV) "Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the LORD did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth. "
10 (HEM) אלה תולדת שם שם בן מאת שנה ויולד את ארפכשד שנתים אחר המבול׃
10 (UKJV) These are the generations of Shem: Shem was an hundred years old, and brings forth Arphaxad two years after the flood:
11 (HEM) ויחי שם אחרי הולידו את ארפכשד חמש מאות שנה ויולד בנים ובנות׃
11 (UKJV) And Shem lived after he brings forth Arphaxad five hundred years, and brings forth sons and daughters.
12 (HEM) וארפכשד חי חמש ושלשים שנה ויולד את שלח׃
12 (UKJV) And Arphaxad lived five and thirty years, and brings forth Salah:
13 (HEM) ויחי ארפכשד אחרי הולידו את שלח שלש שנים וארבע מאות שנה ויולד בנים ובנות׃
13 (UKJV) And Arphaxad lived after he brings forth Salah four hundred and three years, and brings forth sons and daughters.
14 (HEM) ושלח חי שלשים שנה ויולד את עבר׃
14 (UKJV) And Salah lived thirty years, and brings forth Eber:
15 (HEM) ויחי שלח אחרי הולידו את עבר שלש שנים וארבע מאות שנה ויולד בנים ובנות׃
15 (UKJV) And Salah lived after he brings forth Eber four hundred and three years, and brings forth sons and daughters.
16 (HEM) ויחי עבר ארבע ושלשים שנה ויולד את פלג׃
16 (UKJV) And Eber lived four and thirty years, and brings forth Peleg:
17 (HEM) ויחי עבר אחרי הולידו את פלג שלשים שנה וארבע מאות שנה ויולד בנים ובנות׃
17 (UKJV) And Eber lived after he brings forth Peleg four hundred and thirty years, and brings forth sons and daughters.
18 (HEM) ויחי פלג שלשים שנה ויולד את רעו׃
18 (UKJV) And Peleg lived thirty years, and brings forth Reu:
19 (HEM) ויחי פלג אחרי הולידו את רעו תשע שנים ומאתים שנה ויולד בנים ובנות׃
19 (UKJV) And Peleg lived after he brings forth Reu two hundred and nine years, and brings forth sons and daughters.
20 (HEM) ויחי רעו שתים ושלשים שנה ויולד את שרוג׃
20 (UKJV) And Reu lived two and thirty years, and brings forth Serug:
21 (HEM) ויחי רעו אחרי הולידו את שרוג שבע שנים ומאתים שנה ויולד בנים ובנות׃
21 (UKJV) And Reu lived after he brings forth Serug two hundred and seven years, and brings forth sons and daughters.
22 (HEM) ויחי שרוג שלשים שנה ויולד את נחור׃
22 (UKJV) And Serug lived thirty years, and brings forth Nahor:
23 (HEM) ויחי שרוג אחרי הולידו את נחור מאתים שנה ויולד בנים ובנות׃
23 (UKJV) And Serug lived after he brings forth Nahor two hundred years, and brings forth sons and daughters.
24 (HEM) ויחי נחור תשע ועשרים שנה ויולד את תרח׃
24 (UKJV) And Nahor lived nine and twenty years, and brings forth Terah:
25 (HEM) ויחי נחור אחרי הולידו את תרח תשע עשרה שנה ומאת שנה ויולד בנים ובנות׃
25 (UKJV) And Nahor lived after he brings forth Terah an hundred and nineteen years, and brings forth sons and daughters.
26 (HEM) ויחי תרח שבעים שנה ויולד את אברם את נחור ואת הרן׃
26 (UKJV) And Terah lived seventy years, and brings forth Abram, Nahor, and Haran.
27 (HEM) ואלה תולדת תרח תרח הוליד את אברם את נחור ואת הרן והרן הוליד את לוט׃
27 (UKJV) "Now these are the generations of Terah: Terah brings forth Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran brings forth Lot. "
28 (HEM) וימת הרן על פני תרח אביו בארץ מולדתו באור כשדים׃
28 (UKJV) And Haran died before his father Terah in the land of his nativity, in Ur of the Chaldees.
29 (HEM) ויקח אברם ונחור להם נשים שם אשת אברם שרי ושם אשת נחור מלכה בת הרן אבי מלכה ואבי יסכה׃
29 (UKJV) "And Abram and Nahor took them wives: the name of Abram's wife was Sarai; and the name of Nahor's wife, Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah, and the father of Iscah. "
30 (HEM) ותהי שרי עקרה אין לה ולד׃
30 (UKJV) "But Sarai was barren; she had no child. "
31 (HEM) ויקח תרח את אברם בנו ואת לוט בן הרן בן בנו ואת שרי כלתו אשת אברם בנו ויצאו אתם מאור כשדים ללכת ארצה כנען ויבאו עד חרן וישבו שם׃
31 (UKJV) "And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran his son's son, and Sarai his daughter in law, his son Abram's wife; and they went forth with them from Ur of the Chaldees, to go into the land of Canaan; and they came unto Haran, and dwelt there. "
32 (HEM) ויהיו ימי תרח חמש שנים ומאתים שנה וימת תרח בחרן׃
32 (UKJV) And the days of Terah were two hundred and five years: and Terah died in Haran.

ויקח אברם ונחור להם נשים שם אשת אברם שרי ושם אשת נחור מלכה בת הרן אבי מלכה ואבי יסכה׃
Gn 22:20 - ויהי אחרי הדברים האלה ויגד לאברהם לאמר הנה ילדה מלכה גם הוא בנים לנחור אחיך׃

ותהי שרי עקרה אין לה ולד׃
Gn 16:1 - ושרי אשת אברם לא ילדה לו ולה שפחה מצרית ושמה הגר׃
Gn 18:11 - ואברהם ושרה זקנים באים בימים חדל להיות לשרה ארח כנשים׃

ויקח תרח את אברם בנו ואת לוט בן הרן בן בנו ואת שרי כלתו אשת אברם בנו ויצאו אתם מאור כשדים ללכת ארצה כנען ויבאו עד חרן וישבו שם׃
Joz 24:2 - ויאמר יהושע אל כל העם כה אמר יהוה אלהי ישראל בעבר הנהר ישבו אבותיכם מעולם תרח אבי אברהם ואבי נחור ויעבדו אלהים אחרים׃
Neh 9:7 - אתה הוא יהוה האלהים אשר בחרת באברם והוצאתו מאור כשדים ושמת שמו אברהם׃
Sk 7:4 - ויצא מארץ כשדים וישב בחרן ואחרי מות אביו העביר אתו משם אל הארץ הזאת אשר אתם ישבים בה עתה׃
Gn 11,1-9 - Na starej tradícii z Bábelu, ako na pozadí pomätenia jazykov, ukazuje svätopisec, že ani vyspelá civilizácia bez spojenia s Bohom nespája a nezbližuje vnútorne ani ľudí, ale ich odcudzuje navzájom, takže si nakoniec vôbec nerozumejú.
Gn 11,2 - Krajina Senaár bol Babylon (porov. 10,10; Iz 11,11; Dan 1,2).
Gn 11,9 - "Bábel" (Babíl, Bábílu v klinovom písme) značí ,Božiu bránu'. Hebrejské slovo na označenie "zmätku" mohlo by sa odvodzovať od slovesa bálal ,zmiasť, pomútiť'.
Gn 11,10-26 - V týchto veršoch svätopisec ukazuje, že Abrahám, o ktorom bude písať, je Semovým potomkom. Abrahám je praotcom izraelského národa, z ktorého sa narodí Mesiáš. Odteraz zanechá dejiny ostatných národov a bude sa venovať iba osudom Semovho potomka Abraháma. Rodostrom Semových potomkov je podobný ako rodostrom od Adama po Noema. Rozdiel je len v tom, že sa neudáva celkový počet rokov jednotlivých patriarchov.
Gn 11,27-32 - "Abram" je skrátená forma Abirámu "môj otec je vznešený". Abram je teda z rodiny Táreho (hebr. Terach), čiže Terachovcov, ktorá rodina v Písme je označovaná za modloslužobnú (Joz 24,2; Jdt 5,6 atď.). Terach býval v Chaldejskom Ure, v strede kultu mesiaca, v meste, ktoré ležalo neďaleko Perzského zálivu. Tu zomrel jeho syn Aran. Po jeho smrti vysťahoval sa Táre so svojím synom Abramom, s nevestou, ženou Abramovou Sarai, a s vnukom Lotom do Haranu, ktorý leží hodne na severovýchod, na riečke Balíkh, prítoku Eufratu. Vysťahovanie Táreho rodiny do Haranu mohlo mať politický dôvod. Neslobodno však zabúdať na hlavný moment, na moment náboženský, ktorý sa zračí v povolaní Abramovom. Mnohobožstvo sa tak rozmohlo, že ani rodina Táreho neostala ním nedotknutá. Preto Boh odďaľuje Abrama z tohto prostredia a prikazuje mu odísť do novej zeme, v ktorej jeho potomstvo bude ako veľký národ. Boh ho bude požehnávať, ba jeho osoba (Abramova) stane sa požehnaním pre všetky národy. Takto Boh nadprirodzeným spôsobom zachraňuje vieru v jedného Boha, tú vieru, ktorá od počiatku sveta bola prarodičom Bohom zjavená a ktorú postupom času ľudia zamenili za svoj vlastný výtvor, za mnohobožstvo. Sväté písmo nepozná teda náboženský vývoj od nedokonalého náboženstva (mnohobožstva) k dokonalému (jednobožstvu), ono pozná len zjavené náboženstvo, vieru v jediného Boha, a ostatné náboženstvá považuje za odpad od pôvodnej viery.
